Singh: no hype, just total belief that he’ll bring home the belt

INTERVIEWING Callum Singh is like attempting to eat alphabet soup with a fork.
You know there are good words in there, but getting to them is a devil of a job. The tall Coventry bantam is not one to shout his worth from the rooftops.
In an age of boasts and bluster, Singh is pretty much silent on social media. He believes in letting his fists do the talking, which is the way it should be: sadly, in a modern sport of soundbites, gimmicks and fake grudges it’s not the way it always is.
On Friday, the 24-year-old, a product of Bulkington gym, aims to make a statement by lifting the vacant Midlands title. He faces Derbyshire’s Frazer Morgan on Scott Murray’s Sports Connexion, Coventry, show and should start slight favourite in an intriguing, finally balanced 10 rounder.
Morgan has won seven, all on points, and only been beaten by Sean Bruce in a bid to take the Midlands belt down at super-fly.
Singh has outpointed Bruce in a battle that should’ve been for the same title. It got reduced to eight rounds after Callum failed to make weight. His only loss in nine came against thunderous punching Lennon Mulligan in the Scot’s home city of Glasgow: Singh was dropped very heavily very early, then showed tremendous grit to trade before a body shot ended matters in the sixth.
Singh, a tall, accomplished pro, has not spent the build-up to the Frazer fight bragging about starching his opponent, what he’s going to do, what’s he’s going to achieve…From him, it’s been a silent soundtrack for what looks a quality bout.
Long-time trainer Tom Powell said: “I would like him to be a bit more flamboyant on social media, but it just isn’t him. If Cal tried to be like that he wouldn’t be who he is. There are plenty of fighters who have succeeded without being loud mouths.”
Singh is in best ever shape after his best ever camp, Tom pledges. “I’ve never seen Callum so fit and strong, I’m over the moon” he said. “We had the check weigh-in today where he was meant to be three per cent above the fight weight. He was two per cent above the fight weight.
“I’m really proud of him, he’s turned into a really solid pro. Cal, on his day, is **** hot, when he gets it right, he’s a really good kid.
He has a lot to prove after what happened in Scotland (against Mulligan). In Scotland, Lennon got under his skin and that drew Cal into the wrong type of fight. Looking at the current pool out there, I think he’s more than capable of winning the British – if you don’t dream big you won’t achieve anything.”
First, however, there’s Morgan to take care of, an opponent who will come burning with ambition. “I don’t know a great deal about him,” Tom admitted. “I know he’s a tall, stand-up, rangy boxer and was a good amateur. I watched him lose to Sean Bruce – I don’t take much from that result, to be honest.”
On social media, Singh has posted: “Hard work every day, getting that strap soon.” Those expecting more dramatic prophesies on the eve of the big fight are destined to be disappointed.
