Jamie’s title caps top Fitzpatrick weekend

Jamie Ashfield….crowned Midlands champ in the NABGC championships

GOOD to see Fitzpatrick’s gym in Leamington – a small club that packs a big punch in the community - gain a champ.

They’re celebrating 18-year-old Jamie Ashfield’s success in the Midlands final of the NABGC championships, held at Acocks Green over the weekend.

But it was a success that encountered an outside-the-ropes hiccup along the way. Jamie was scheduled to face Zane Bireh (Impact ABC, Stoke) in the Class C 51-54kg final on Saturday.

Due to communication problems and the fact three bouts had been cancelled prior to the clash, Jamie was caught unprepared when the early call to the ring came.

Gym boss Derek Fitzpatrick said: “It was unsettling for both young boxers, due to this miscommunication, and it was agreed with coaches and officials to box this bout the day after.”

It proved a very successful Sunday for Jamie, who had his hand raised following a hard-fought scrap. After an even first round Ashfield’s edge in speed and movement shone through.

Davey Boswell…hard fought victory on Friday night

That capped a good weekend for Fitzpatrick’s. On Friday middleweight Davey Boswell gained a hard-fought victory over Krystian Kelly (Billy’s ABC).

The 21-year-old was appearing on a show in aid of local charity Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice at Weston Hall, Bulkington. It was put together by Bulkington ABC.

Fitzpatrick’s coach Mickey D said of the fight: “Sometimes it wasn’t pretty in there, but the more frequent and telling shots came from our Davey who deservedly to have his hand raised against a teak tough opponent.”
