Carey cruises to 4-0 with Durnan victory

UNDER the guidance of Frankie Gavin, Worcester welter Liam Carey’s career is progressing nicely.
No rush. No drama. One piece of the jigsaw at a time. No need yet for sparks from the 25-year-old who is, by day, an electrician. On BCB’s Saturday show at Aldersley Stadium, Wolverhampton, Carey made it four wins on the spin with a comprehensive four rounds decision over Owen Durnan.
Referee Ryan Churchill gave the Sheffield southpaw a share of one round, scoring 40-37, possibly rewarding Durnan’s work in the last. I had it a clean sweep 40-36 for Carey.
He began as he meant to go on, jabbing crisply and always looking to plant right uppercuts. An eye-catching straight right caught Durnan (10st 12lbs) in the second, but he responded with a fast one-two of his own.
Carey (11st) kept the right hands coming in the third as Durnan retreated with gloves held high.
The last saw the best action as Liam opened up with both hands and Durnan stayed with him. It also saw the best single shot of the fight – a lovely right uppercut whipped in by Carey.
Carey said: “The first three rounds were very comfortable. The fourth, he came in and had a go, which I think is brilliant because it gives me the opportunity to learn, to adapt. I’m happy he came and had a go and I was able to show a bit more.
“We were actually preparing for an orthodox fighter, but it didn’t matter because Frankie naturally slips into a southpaw stance on the pads so we were subconsciously prepared.”
Carey can now dream of a Midland title fight – something he wants to happen “in the foreseeable future”. “I have to get a few six rounders behind me,” he said. “It’s about preparing yourself for the adrenaline, the crowd, getting your body ready for 10 rounds.”
Liam added: “Five years ago if you’d told me I’d be 4-0 as a pro, I would’ve taken that. Five years ago I didn’t even think I’d be a pro.”
