Another GB gold for unstoppable Matty!

Matty Williams…now Birmingham City want the fighter on board

UNSTOPPABLE super-heavy Matty Williams seems poised to be adopted by his beloved Birmingham City football club.

And it surely cannot be long before the 21-year-old gets what he craves – the chance to walk on the St Andrew’s turf on match day and salute the fellow Bluenose faithful.

The club has a quite phenomenal fighting machine among its supporters – and Matty, from Marston Green, is such a diehard fan you almost expect his nose to bleed blue.

Guided by Max McCracken, pro coach at Acocks Green ABC, Williams has mopped-up at domestic level and is now – as a member of the GB squad – proving a hurricane force on the international scene.

He’s just returned victorious from the multi-nations 7th Grand Prix tournament staged in Zagreb, Croatia. That’s two appearances for Great Britain, two gold medals.

Williams, a former Birmingham Council grass cutter, isn’t just beating people, he’s mowing them down. On current form, you cannot help thinking: “Are we looking at a future Olympic medallist?” That’s his target.

In Zagreb, Matty overpowered good Croatian southpaw Borna Pejik to claim gold.

Of the contest, Max said: “Matty won the first and second with his better workrate and pressure, catching Pejic with good sharp, combinations - but it was still competitive.

“In the third Pejic looked tired, Matty moved through the gears, landing heavy shots and gave the Croat three standing counts - the ref stopping the fight to save the home boxer from further punishment.

“Matty’s again showing improvements, showing all the hard work is paying off. I expect him to be even better next year and he’s still only 21.”

Williams has his hand raised after Pejik victory in Croatia

That’s the most exciting thing. In heavyweight terms, Williams is a mere baby – the man-strength is yet to fully develop. Yet he’s bullying big, hardened, mature men.

What he possesses is an astonishing engine for an individual who stands 6ft 4ins tall and weighs 17 stone, a welterweight’s engine. Matty punches non-stop, like some heavyweight Henry Armstrong, until the other guy wilts.

Birmingham City now appear to realise the talent of the boxer who wears their colours.

Max said: “I’ve been speaking to the people at the Blues. They are keen to get behind Matty and are sending a film team to do some filming with Matty and myself. Birmingham City Football Club are showing a big interest in Matty, which is great and appreciated. It won’t be long before he’s out on the pitch.”

I agree. But a talent like Williams – and Birmingham hasn’t been overly blessed with top class heavyweight champions – should be savoured by all sections of the city, all colours.

I mean, I’m enjoying the ride and I’m a Wolves fan.
