Singh returns at the Excelsior after loss

Callum Singh…back in action in Cannock on September 25

AFTER tasting defeat for the time in his career, Callum Singh returns to action at Cannock’s Excelsior sporting club on September 25.

The Coventry boxer will look to erase the memory of his brave, but unsuccessful bid to take the Commonwealth silver bantamweight title in June.

Fighting in Glasgow, the 23-year-old showed real steel to climb off the canvas in the first and go to war with Lennon Mulligan. A body shot ended his gutsy stand in the sixth.

That was Callum’s first setback after seven straight wins – one of them over the Midlands super-flyweight champ.

“He ticked a lot of boxes in Glasgow,” said Brendan Norman, head of the Bulkington gym where Callum trains. “And he’s still so young.

“Some people go through their entire career and don’t get to the place Callum’s been.

“Losing is part of the sport. They way I see it, if you never lost, you didn’t try hard enough. It’s the same as life, if you’ve never failed, you haven’t tried hard enough.

“Callum was cheered out of the ring (in Glasgow). He was in a great fight and I think his stock rose.”

Brendan added: “September 25 is about putting a win back in the column, getting his tail back up, although it’s not that down.”
