Singh begins march to titles in home city
Callum Singh with trainer Tom Powell…March date for the super-fly
COVENTRY’S big guns are lining-up for a major March show in the city.
Bradley Goldsmith, Huey Malone, Jess Barry and Callum Singh are among a host of local fighters scheduled to appear on Scott Murray’s bill at Connexion Arena on March 27. Hopefully, Nuneaton’s Minaaz Gurung will defend his Midlands super-lightweight title on the bill.
For talented Singh, part of Brendan Norman’s Bulkington gym, it’s a ring return after suffering his only pro defeat last June.
Back then, he travelled to Glasgow to face Scottish puncher Lennon Mulligan for the Commonwealth silver bantam belt and proved he possesses courage in abundance before the sixth round stoppage.
Trained by Tom Powell, the 23-year-old has shown plenty of promise in his eight bout career. Now it’s about getting back on track.
“Get him a win and get going again,” Brendan Norman said. “Callum’s been out of the gym, but he’s back now.”
Surprisingly, Ingle insists Singh’s future lies at super-fly – despite Callum failing to make the weight for a Midlands title fight in 2024.
The bout went ahead and champ Sean Bruce was beaten over eight rounds – a win that gave Singh little satisfaction.
Brendan put the weight wobble down to “inexperience”. Callum believed he was only one pound over the championship limit on the day of the weigh-in, went to his own gym to shed the excess only to discover the scales there had him closer to three pounds over.
He tried to make super-fly, but it was too much.
“Callum has a nutritionist now,” Brendan said. “For the fight with Lennon Mulligan he made bantamweight too easy – he had drinks and breakfast before weighing in.
“We’d like the March 27 show to start a push towards a Midlands title fight. The two lads who are fighting for the British title, Alfie Clegg and Sean Bruce – I think he can beat both. Callum’s sparred Alfie so I know that’s a winnable fight. We’re looking to win the British.
“I’d like to get him a good win, let the dust settle between Alfie Clegg and Sean, then go for the British. Whether the boxing gods allow that to happen so easily is another matter.”
Singh is one of the game’s quiet men. He believes in letting his fists do the talking.
Brendan added: “He doesn’t do social media which is a bit frustrating for us because we know how important it is. He’s not one for big-ing it up or mouthing off which also helps. He’s just a genuinely nice lad. Hopefully, we can sort him out a Midlands title and see what that brings.”
Promoter Scott Murray said of the March show: “It’s mega for Coventry. Tickets go on sale next week and we’re looking for a sell-out.”
