Regan Williams…fire fighter by day, pro fighter by night

REGAN Williams, fire-fighter by day, ignites his pro boxing career on next Friday’s huge BCB Promotions “Independence Day” bill.

And the 25-year-old has pledged to come out smoking at Wolverhampton’s Hangar Events Venue on July 4. It’s a big debut stage for the Willenhall man, with Sian O’Toole defending her Midlands featherweight title against Doina Costin in the main event.

Williams, based at Oldbury fire station, admits he didn’t set the world alight in an amateur career nudging close to 50 bouts. But under the guidance of chief trainer Mitchell Pearce, he’s going to give the paid code his all.

“I didn’t sit down on my shots as an amateur,” he said. “I moved about a lot, and you can’t do that as a pro. We’ve been working on slowing my feet down.

“If I was to box how I want to box, I think I’d describe myself as a sharp-shooter, boxing at long range.

“I wasn’t known as a big puncher, but I can punch hard enough to gain people’s respect.”

Life is certainly full-on for the fledgling fighter. As well as his job with the fire-service, Regan’s part of his family’s business A’ Jam Locksmiths. “If you’re in a jam, we’ll sort you out,” he chuckled, quick to seize on an advertising opportunity. “I’m a locksmith by trade.

“I’m very lucky. I have to work my training around my shift pattern, but the (fire) station has a gym I can use to keep my fitness up.”

Regan began boxing at the age of 12, then competed for Priory Park as a senior, reaching a Haringey Cup final.

“I love boxing,” he said. “I never really felt I could turn pro, but my coaches’ belief in me pushed me forward. At Priory, the helped me to progress to professional boxing.” Priory’s Paul Gough is still a key member of Regan’s team.

“At the start, it’s about being the best I can possibly be and we’ll see from there. I’m buzzing about Friday night.”
