Pocket Rocket Darry signs for McCracken
Darpreet “Darry” Singh….”I like to stand and bang,” says the new pro
BUSY McCracken’s gym, in Birmingham, is becoming something of a base for boxing’s little men.
With Spencer McCracken Snr at the helm, it is already the sweat shop where former Commonwealth light-flyweight champ Matt Windle and ex WBO super-flyweight king Ijaz Ahmed.
Now a new “Mighty Atom” has joined the stable.
Darpreet “Darry” Singh, a 25-year-old from Billesley, Birmingham, will join the handful of pro boxers who make-up this country’s light-flyweight division – at under eight stone, our lowest weight division.
“I walk around at flyweight without having to cut,” he said. “Once I start tracking the calories, making weight won’t be a problem.”
Darpreet, who works at the family’s general store, has turned over after a short 15 bout career with Acocks Green ABC. He achieved quite a lot in a short space of time, winning a national title and striking gold at last year’s Manchester Box Cup.
“I think my style will suit the pros a little more than the amateurs,” he said. “I like to plant my feet, stand and bang – and I feel in the lighter weight classes I will bang quite a bit. I like to come forward, I’m quite an aggressive fighter.”
Courtesy of his parent’s popular business, he should also sell tickets in good numbers.
Darpreet has been inspired by Windle and Ahmed’s successes but stressed: “I’m taking it one step at a time, keep making little improvements. When my style has adapted to the pro game I’ll make my debut.
“I joined the McCrackens because it is a proven name. The gym is a nice atmosphere to train in and the sparring is of a top category.”
