NEW promotional partnership Scott Murray and Jon Pegg have sent a powerful message of intent with news they’ll stage 20 shows next year.
That’s an awful lot of shows.
The dates are locked-in, the venues unveiled and coverage by TalkSport secured. The duo plan to make 2026 a very big year.
For Murray, who gained his promotional licence two years ago, the packed programme underlines his ambition. Cannock’s former heavyweight wants to be among the big players and is prepared to gamble to get there.
“It’s a good time and a good partnership,” he said of his alliance with Birmingham boxing powerhouse Pegg. “Jon’s stable is getting bigger, we have a lot of very good fighters to work with.”
The 20 shows will be spread across four or five venues. Scott’s exclusive Excelsior Club will be used alongside Chase Leisure Centre, in Cannock. Coventry’s Planet Ice and the Holiday Inn, Birmingham Airport, will also host shows and there are high hopes of securing former famed fight venue Wolverhampton Civic Hall.
Some will be co-promoted by Murray and Pegg, others will see Jon in the role of matchmaker.
“We’re in discussion with the WBC and WBA over international title fights,” said Scott. “We also plan Commonwealth, English and, of course, Midlands titles.”
He added: “I didn’t expect to be in this position so soon.”
One date already known about is February 7 at Chase Leisure Centre. On that night, Tyler Rivers and Elliott Sowe meet for the Midlands welterweight title and it’s hoped English champ Jess Barry will return on the bill after being sidelined by a neck injury.
Murray began his promotional career by unveiling the exclusive Excelsior Sporting Club based at his Premier Suite business in Cannock. From there he staged public shows at the same venue and in September put on a major title night at the Chase Leisure Centre.
His short-term goal is to secure Wolverhampton Civic Hall – now re-branded as simply The Halls – and follow in the footsteps of friend and mentor Ron Gray.
As a promoter, Ron staged superb boxing events, featuring stars such as Pat Cowdell, Tony Sibson and Bunny Johnson, at the Civic during the 1970s and 80s.
I understand Scott is negotiating the possibility of two dates at the venue.
