Melvin in line for a silver title challenge
Scott Melvin…talks underway for Commonwealth title bid
SCOTT “Terrier” Melvin is back chasing titles after his big revenge win over Dylan Cheema.
The talented Chelmsley Wood lightweight will headline promoter Scott Murray’s public show at the Premier Suite, Cannock, on Sunday, November 22.
And negotiations are underway for that bout to be for the Commonwealth silver title, although an opponent has yet to be named. Those silver belts can be contested over eight rounds – the distance Scott and Jon Pegg, Melvin’s manager, are considering for the contest.
For 26-year-old Melvin the news is quick reward for his fine victory over Cheema on MVP’s big BP Pulse Live Arena show, in Birmingham, in August.
Coventry’s Cheema is the only man to beat former Midlands champ Scott, beating him on a close three round decision in 2022.
The return proved very different. Melvin fought with precision and patience to cut and break Dylan with body punches in the sixth.
Manager Pegg admitted that, if the opportunity arose, he’d have no hesitation in taking a British title fight for Melvin. He said: “He’s good enough, he’s done 10 rounds, he’s coming off a good win. How many more boxes do you need to tick?”
Melvin told me: “I want a British title, I want to be signed (by a major promoter) and pushed. I want titles, big fights. I want to do it on the big shows, I want to push on. The public haven’t seen the best of me, they’ve seen nowhere near what I’m capable of and I’m excited about showing it in this one.”
The Cannock show will also feature Dudley prospect Brad Willetts, unbeaten in five; Birmingham’s Luke Neale, looking to make it a hat-trick of paid wins; new bantam hope Mia Hull (2-0); unbeaten Midlands super-middle contender Omar Davis (6-0).
