Mayor joins plaudits for new champ Ollie
Wolverhampton mayor Paul Singh…proud of Cooper’s achievement
GOOD to see Ollie Cooper and his Wolverhampton gym get the recognition they deserve following his superb English super-middleweight win.
And it was some performance from the unbeaten 25-year-old. In his stiffest test, southpaw Ollie belted out James Osborne at York Hall, Bethnal Green, to claim the belt.
In Wolverhampton, the praise has come from very high places. City mayor Councillor Paul Singh has even sent a message of congratulations to Richard Carter’s gym.
I didn’t know Cllr Singh was a fight fan and welcome his support for boxing in the Black Country. It’s probably the first time he’s made headlines on a pro boxing site.
He said: “It is a great pleasure to congratulate Wolverhampton's own Ollie Cooper on becoming the new English champion following his outstanding victory at the iconic York Hall in Bethnal Green, London.

“From joining Wolves Boxing – aka Wolverhampton Boxing Club - as a shy 15-year-old, to now being a Midlands champion, English champion and ranked number six in Britain, Ollie's journey is an inspiring example of hard work, determination and resilience. He is not only a fantastic boxer but also a great role model for young people across our city.
“I’m also proud to share that Wolverhampton Boxing Club is one of my chosen charities this year. It holds a special place in my heart for the incredible work it does supporting young people, building their confidence, discipline, and giving them real opportunities to thrive.
Well done, Ollie - Wolverhampton is proud of you!”
