Matty has Olympics dream after GB call

Matty Williams with Max McCracken…now the world awaits

A VERY big future beckons for super-heavy Matty Williams following news he has joined Great Britain’s boxing squad.

That means the 20-year-old Acocks Green ABC super-heavyweight is now a full-time fighter who will be competing around the world.

In preparation, Williams has taken part in an England warm weather training camp in Tenerife.

The call-up has capped a dream season for Birmingham City die-hard Matty. The former council grass-cutter bagged another national title, made his England and was crowned tri-nations champ.

In truth, the lad simply couldn’t be ignored by GB. He hits hard and is blessed with an engine that makes the Duracell Bunny look like a shirker.

Max McCracken, pro trainer at Acocks Green, said: “Matty passed his GB Boxing assessment. He has been invited on to the GB Boxing podium squad full-time. A great achievement!

“Now our aim is to work hard towards being selected for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 - there will be a lot of hard work ahead to make that dream come true.

“At the moment, that is the dream Matty is working towards. He will be training in Sheffield from Friday, July 4, at GB’s English Institute of Sports and be there from Monday to Thursday each week.

“Then he’ll train with me at Acocks Green on Fridays and some Sundays. He impressed all the coaches up in Sheffield and I’ve received great feedback.

“He’s improving all the time, and his hard work is paying off!”

It certainly is. Williams has conquered the home nations, now he’s out to conquer the world.
