It’s about keeping up with the Joneses on Holiday Inn fight bill

Dave (right) and Rob Jones…twins take part in their second fight

INTERESTING – if slightly bizarre – bill at Birmingham Airport’s Holiday Inn.

The August 29 show has been given the working title “It’s A Jones Thing” – and for good reason.

The bill is topped by former English light-heavyweight champ Troy Jones. It’s the Birmingham raised, Tamworth based puncher’s first bout since his gallant points loss to Ezra Taylor in May. That is former English champ Troy’s only loss in a 13 bout career.

Two more Jones’s are also boxing on the show – identical twins Dave and Rob, former army amateur champs from Shirley.

Troy is not related to the twins, but they are close friends. They are all managed by Lee Beard.

There’ll be yet another Jones appearing on the night, if an imitation one. Fans will be entertained by a Tom Jones tribute act.

It’s Not Unusual in pubs and clubs. It’s very unusual in a boxing small hall.

Promoter Jon Pegg laughed: “It’s a shame (unbeaten Chelmsley Wood super-middle) Brandon Jones isn’t ready. We would’ve had four of them.”

Five including fake Tom Jones.

It’s a Jones thing…poster for the show headlined by Troy

On social media, Troy, aged 27, posted: “No waiting around. Straight back to it to set up something big towards the end of the year.

“Looking forward to seeing you all there. Let’s pack out the gaff, make some noise and punch someone’s head off.”

I’m looking forward to seeing 30-year-old twins Dave and Rob back in action. They’re larger-than-life individuals with entertaining styles.

Both super-lightweights made their debuts at the Holiday Inn in February. Dave outpointed Paul Cummings, Rob was held to a draw by rugged Connor Meanwell.

Dave told me: “Troy and us are very close, we might as well be brothers. It’s a really good platform and we’re inspired by everything he’s done in his career. Never give up on your dreams.

“We train with fighters who are on TV and believe we can do the same.”

Rob said: “It’s all about learning. I didn’t lose last time, I went back to the gym and carried on training.

“We need to stay in the gym, stay busy and take every opportunity that comes our way. Now it’s our time.

“We sacrifice so much and train so hard. Get us a title fight and it will be ours.”
