Fitzpatrick gym ends season with a bang
Sam Stretton….points victory for the 15-year-old in Banbury
BOXERS at Leamington’s Fitzpatrick gym are finishing the season strongly, with five of its fighters in recent action.
There were four wins and a split decision loss in an Armed Forces contest. The action has seen the lads box in Hinckley, Banbury, Redditch and Birmingham.
George Rowley, aged 15, made his debut in Hinckley against Zac Fray (Heart of England) and gained points victory.
Coach Derek Fitzpatrick said: “George’s success came from solid dedication and consistency in the gym. We utilised the skills bout process for George and let him go when the time was right - and it was.”
Sam Stretton, also 15, faced a very awkward, unorthodox opponent at Banbury’s Spice Ball Arena, but gained a unanimous decision over the home boxer, Ethan McGregor.
The squad then travelled to Redditch for Wallop ABC’s major Armed Forces show. Sixteen-year-old Oscar Marsh gained a first round stoppage win over the host club’s Chase Holden Smith.
Davey Boswell…narrowly lost out to a Royal Navy fighter
On the same show at Redditch Town’s football ground, Fitzpatrick’s senior boxer David Boswell faced the Royal Navy’s Tommy Caulfield.
The 21-year-old lost out on a wafer-thin split decision and many spectators felt he was unlucky. Coach Mick Dorgan said: “It was close. We believe Davey had done enough.
“But this is sport and congratulations to his opponent – hopefully, they can do it again.”
Oscar Marsh…stoppage victory on major Redditch show
Over on Andersons ABC show in Birmingham, Raffy Martins gained a close split decision over the home club’s Jake Carey.
“This is another one we may revisit,” said Mick Dorgan, “because it made for a great boxing match.”
With box cups coming up for the gym’s Sam Stretton and Tommy Lee and a couple of exciting newcomers, the future looks bright for the Leamington gurdwara based gym which hosts its first home show later this year.
