Top debut for D&A first female pro Mia

Mia Hull celebrates her first victory. The bantam’s out again on October 1

MIA Hull has precious little time to rest on her laurels following a dream pro debut last Friday.

The bantamweight is out again on promoter Scott Murray’s October 1 show at his Excelsior Sporting Club in Cannock. Mia’s swapping the roar of last week’s public bill at Coventry’s Sports Connexion, for Scott’s plush black tie sporting club.

Nothing publicly announced, but I believe the opponent will be Leeds’ Kira Carter who has close to 40 bouts under her belt.

Mia’s professional baptism – a 40-36 four round shutout over Sydney Chambers – revealed she’s aggressive, exciting and has a good following: over 100 hundred fans bought tickets.

She also possesses a fun, bubbly – I’m wary of saying dizzy, but some remarks border on the description – personality. Watching her progress will be very entertaining.

Stirchley’s Mia, trained by dad Anthony, boss of Birmingham’s D&A gym, managed by Jon Pegg, certainly enjoyed her first taste of the paid game.

She said: “I loved the walkout to reggae song Who Knows, everyone sang along. I was very nervous, my legs felt like they were on fire, but as soon as they announced my name all the nerves disappeared. I do a little tuck jump before the start and they just go. When the bell rang it was a different Mia in the building.”

Lancashire’s Chambers provided a solid test, despite a now 10 fight losing record. “The last round was wall-to-wall,” 21-year-old Mia said, “she did put pressure on me. My dad said I put on a good performance and was very sharp.”

Another positive is the fact Hull emerged from the fight without blood leaking from her nose – a common occurrence in the amateurs. “I didn’t bleed, she did,” she said.

There is a certain irony about Mia’s job as a dental technician. By day she helps to fix teeth, by night she attempts to loosen them. Either way, it’s good for business at the surgery where she works.

Promoter Murray must be well pleased with the tickets Mia sold, she’s a popular girl. I was surprised by the long list of sponsors she’s already gathered: “I’m very dedicated to what I do and people appreciate that.”

She’s getting top sparring, this week sharing the ring with Jessica Barry and Ebonie Cotton, next week with Emma Dolan.

Mia’s over the moon about a swift return to action. She added: “I’m already in camp for the next one, we might as well go again. I’ll come to fight regardless – I leave my coaches to look at who I’m fighting. I’m ready to go straight back in it.”
