Cheema comeback on Birmingham bill
Dylan Cheema…returns after almost two years away from ring
AFTER almost two years out of the ring, Dylan Cheema makes his return on October 3 on BCB Promotions' “Stand and Deliver” show at the Eastside Rooms, Birmingham.
Coventry’s former Boxxer Series lightweight champion (9-2) will be looking to get his career back on track as he makes the short journey up the M6 with his loyal supporters.
It’s good to have Cheema up and running again because of the colour and excitement he brings to shows. The ring walks, which include drummers and banners, are theatrical, his style is all action.
It’s fair to say things haven’t gone to plan for the 29-year-old. He seemed set for a dazzling future after winning the major Boxxer knockout tournament in April, 2022 – a last-man-standing competition that earned him a major cash prize, dream promotional contract and slots on big televised shows.
A star appeared to be born on that memorable night as Cheema, a two fight novice and huge underdog, emerged victorious.
He’s struggled to recapture the form shown on that glorious night. Quality journeyman Jordan Ellison gained a close points decision over Cheema in November, 2022, and last time out tough Nicaraguan Robin Zamora beat him in a six rounder.
He has talent, blistering hand speed and bravery.
But I always felt the Boxxer tournament success was a double-edged sword for Cheema, back then a fighter still wearing L Plates. Expectation was heaped on his shoulders, he was showcased on TV bills, yet may have benefitted more from quietly learning his trade on the small hall circuit.
That memorable win hurried the apprenticeship, I felt.
Midlands featherweight champion Sian O'Toole is also on the Eastside Rooms bill.
Sian (7-0) came through her first title defence against Doina Costin in impressive style and is back out for her third fight of 2025 as she continues her ascent through the British rankings.
He didn't get the win over in Saudi Arabia, but Selly Oak’s Hamza Azeem (8-1) will have learnt plenty from his WBC Grand Prix experience, and he is back boxing in his home city as he closes in on a Midlands title opportunity.
On the show, Shannon Taylor makes her professional debut and Nico Ogbeide returns after Midlands title defeat. The card also includes highly touted Omarah Taylor (5-0) and unbeaten heavyweight Arlo Stephens (2-0).
