Brandon battles for Commonwealth belt

Brandon Jones….Saturday night looks like being a real thriller

COVER your ears and get ready for the explosion.

On Saturday, Chelmsley Wood’s Brandon Jones faces the first real acid test of his career – and has his first chance to gain a major title. This one looks a real gunfight.

At Stoke’s Kings Hall, Brandon faces Potteries powerhouse Kyle Davies for the vacant Commonwealth light-heavyweight title. It has all the hallmarks of a thriller. Both are unbeaten, both are on the way up, both possess wrecking ball power.

Jones, aged 26, has compiled an 11-0 record, with four wins coming early. He took a two year break from the game before teaming up with old amateur coach Wayne Elcock in 2025.

Davies, aged 25 and from Werrington, Staffordshire, is 12-0, with eight stoppages. It’s a well worn adage, but someone’s “O” has to go.

“I’m excited, I can’t wait,” Jones said. “I’ve seen a few little videos of him – they’re saying he’s the next big thing, I don’t see it. I watched his last fight – the lad was catching him until he got caught with a body shot.

“It’s wicked, I can’t wait. I feel there’s more to my game, defo. I’m not going to look for the knockout…if it comes, it comes.”

Fighting in the other guy’s backyard hold no fear for Jones, from a well-known boxing family. “I’ve done it all in the amateurs,” he said. “I’ve always had that pressure, I feel it makes me perform better.

“It’s funny, a few months ago I was saying, ‘put me on an away show, I want to step up’ and then we got the phone call. He hasn’t done a 12 rounder, I don’t think he’s done the full 10. That’s a bonus, that means we’re at the same level.

“It’s my first real step-up, I’ve had good sparring, it’s going to be a great fight.”

Brandon’s trainer Wayne Elock said: “I wouldn’t take a fight like this if I didn’t think Brandon was going to win it. You haven’t seen the best of Brandon – we’re starting to see a polished performer, he’s showing the speed he had as an amateur.

“He’s been a slow-burner and this can catapult him to a new level – that’s what it’s all about.”
