‘Bomber’ Jones plots an explosive return

THERE’S something in the genes of the Jones family, from Chelmsley Wood, that bestows on them the ability to bang people out in the ring.

Former English light-heavyweight champ Troy hits very hard.

And cousin Brandon is “Bomber” by ring name, bomber by nature, with half of his eight straight wins coming early.

After a two year absence from the game, Brandon unloads the heavy stuff again on Saturday night at Birmingham Airport’s Holiday Inn.

Unless new trainer Wayne Elcock has radically refined the 25-year-old’s rampaging style, it will be “bombs away” against Camden’s Robbie Chapman. With Brandon, it always is.

It’s not a bad six rounder, certainly not a given for the home fighter. Chapman may have lost many more than he’s won in a 73 bout career, but he comes to scrap and just four months ago held Midlands middleweight champ Troy Coleman to a draw.

“I’m buzzing,” Brandon, a landscaper by day, said. “I’m sharp and you can expect something explosive. I always say I don’t look for the stoppage, but if it comes, it comes.

“I’ve done just over 100 tickets for this one so I’ll be well supported.”

Brandon put his long lay-off down to personal problems. “I’ve screwed my head back on now,” he vowed. “I want titles.”

Tasked with guiding the charge to belts is former British champ Elcock who trained Brandon during a fine amateur career that netted two national titles. “He’s constantly on me, he’s good to be around,” the boxer said.

After competing as a light-heavy, Elcock is taking Brandon down a division to super-middle.

“Next after this I’d love a Midlands title,” Jones said. “I’m going down to super-middle and I think I’ll be a different animal. I’ll be massive for the weight.

“I’d love to win the British title and I believe with my head screwed on I can do it. I have a beautiful daughter, just turned three, and she’s the reason I’m doing this, she pushes me on.”

Brandon gains inspiration from cousin Troy and aims to emulate his success.

“We support each other,” he said. “I look up to Troy, he knows what he’s doing. Winning the English title was amazing and even his last fight was unbelievable.”

On Saturday someone should warn Birmingham Airport a Bomber is about to land.
