Berry title fight is on Cannock supershow
Nyall Berry…defends English super-bantam belt on September 13
I’M beginning to get a fight fan’s tingle over Scott Murray’s super show at Cannock’s Chase Leisure Centre, such is the sheer scale of the venture.
At present, the September 13 bill features two WBC international title fights, an English title fight, a title eliminator and a Midlands title fight.
What’s more, Las Vegas KO specialist Craig “Sledgehammer” Parker – a man with 20 straight stoppage wins – is flying over to be part of the action.
Ten fights in all. Such is the size of the audacious venture that it no longer fits the description “small hall”.
It’s more like some fight festival – and it appears to be growing each day.
“It really is a great show,” said Scott. “We’re spoiling them.”
Latest addition to the card is Chelmsley Wood’s explosive Nyall Berry. He will be making a defence of the English super-bantamweight, though the opponent has yet to be named.
Murray said: “I brought professional boxing back to Cannock through my Excelsior Sporting Club shows and was originally happy with that, but things have progressed.
“We could have put this on at the Civic Hall (Wolverhampton) or a major Birmingham venue, but Cannock’s got it. Those venues are for the future.”

Sam Eggington, Stourbridge’s former world light-middleweight champ, is in international title action in the joint main event. Coventry’s multi-titled Jess Barry shares top billing in an international super-bantam battle with Stevi Levy. Minaaz Gurung will fight for the vacant Midlands super-lightweight crown, Scott assures, though an opponent has yet to be confirmed.
And rumours swirl that Cannock’s own Zach Evans will be in a very significant 10 round contest.
Also appearing are Leo Fanthome, Ashlee Eales, Brad Willetts and American powerhouse Parker.
“Sledgehammer” Parker’s inclusion is intriguing and exciting in equal measure. His service have been secured through Scott’s friendship with legendary Stateside trainer Jesse Reid – and it’s going to be more than a flying visit.
“We have big plans for Craig,” Scott added. “He’s got a fight in Nashville before our show, then he’ll spend a few months here training at Jon Pegg’s gym. I think he’s going to win a world title.”
When the man known as “the White Tyson” enters the ring, Cannock should brace itself for the earth juddering explosion.
