Bantam Blount looks a real pocket rocket

I’LL admit to being mightily impressed by Faye Blount, a five foot tall bundle of fighting fury who made her pro debut on BCB’s Saturday Aldersley Stadium, Wolverhampton, show.

Admittedly, the opponent was Sydney Chambers – still searching for her first win after 11 starts, but I’ve seldom seen a female fighter drive home body shots with such frequency, accuracy and power.

Those lefts to the ribs were reminiscent of Ricky Hatton, the difference being Blount – a former kick-boxer from Gavin Burrows’ Trojan gym – couldn’t end matters with them.

But the Willenhall bantam dominated from first bell to last for a 40-36 four round whitewash from referee Ryan Churchill.

By the final bell, Blount had established herself as something of a mighty atom. Constantly pressing, she bobbed and weaved, fired out fast jabs before detonating left hooks to the ribs.

Lancashire’s Chambers was caught by a blindingly fast double left hook to the body in the second, then slammed by a right.

The only inconvenience experienced by Faye was a third round hairstyle howler, with the session delayed as her corner tied-up the fighter’s trailing, disobedient tresses. Burrows didn’t reckon on including a spot of hairdressing during his corner work.

Chambers, to her credit, did attempt to battle back in the third, but lacked the speed and power to keep the whirlwind before her at bay.

Blount capped a fine display with an eye-catching jab, right hand, left to the body in the last. On this performance and at that weight, an area title fight could come as early as next year for Faye.

Both women scaled 8st 9lbs.
